Dirty Sensors…….

Hi, We recently carried out a wedding at Gosfield Hall in Suffolk.  It was a very hot day (what a surprise) and it went very well.  I edited the photographs the day after and found lots of black dots on the photographs..

I checked the lenses, they were fine. I then put my sensor inspection gadget on th camera. The sensor was filthy.  So all the photographs had to be cleaned in Photoshop, and the sensor had to be cleaned by a specialist.

Moral of the story. It’s not only the lens front that get dirty, the sensors do as well. Even on very expensive professional cameras.

The first photograph show the dirty marks, the second was after I “Cleaned” it.

Hi, Just a very quick tip…………..

Changing and / or manipulating photographs in paint /Photoshop takes a lot of left and right clicking on the mouse. This can lead to pain in the forearm if you do it for hours on end.  If you are editing a wedding load images you will feel it at the end of the day.

The answer could be to use a graphic tablet and pen.  Instead of using your fingers to click the mouse you just tap the pen on the graphic tablet.  I found that with practice I could use this faster than the mouse and without pain even after 8 hours of editing.  It was well worth the £80 it cost me.

The photography below took a fair bit of manipulating……….with a graphic pen it was easy.

I LOVE a good sky

Image Control Photography

In this country, where the skies tend to be either cloudy
(i.e. flat and white) or full of rain it’s sometimes difficult to get any
interest into the sky.  SO, remember the
select tool in Photoshop….. Select the sky, go to adjust saturation and pull in
some colour.  You will be surprised how
much of a difference it can make as the photograph above shows.

An aid to editing photographs….with a GREAT wine tip

Image Control Photography photographed a lovely wedding quite recently. There was around 400 photographs to edit.  The same process is applied to each image.   Exposure > Brightness> Saturation>Temperature, you know the score. It was a hot day and the taste of … Continue reading

The Race for Mega Pixels

As you have probably seen the advertisement on the television there is a race to make slim (pocket) camera with a capability of using 10, 15 or 20 million pixels. The advertisementshow how brilliant they are with all the gizmos you could ever want. HD filming, out of foucused background……….They will be making the tea next. If this mini marvel camera could operate a microwave and cut the lawn I wouldn’t need a wife. Sometimes I think “Why does Image Control Photography need a Nikon D3x at just over £5K when I can buy this super-go-faster camera I can put in my pocket and pay only £89.99?

Well, the answer is this…………………..

These cameras are great, they take reasonably OK photos,
easy to carry, but they have server limitations and they all revolve around the lens. The lens on this type of camera is very small, and at this cost made from plastic. The pro lens on my Nikon is glass, and very expensive. The lens is also quite big to allow for a lot of light to go through it quickly. My sister in law Susan has one, she complained that the camera takes ages for the shutter to work. This is because the small lens takes an age to let the light in. Incidentally she has gone back to her 3 mega pixel camera with a bigger lens and gets better results.

The moral of this story is…….Lots of pixels are only half the story.

More Tips

I was in my local camera shop today, looking for a new lens. We have been asked to photograph some wedding rings for a local trader so I need a better macro lens, hence the visit.

Whilst looking at the bargains the retailer had on offer I saw some lens cleaning wipes. This fantastic offer (from a major lens manufacturer) was for a pack of 20 alcohol wipes, sealed individually for the princely sum of £4.99.

Last week I bought some wipes from my local Aldi, same thing, but 99 pence for a 100. The wipes didn’t have the name of this major lens manufacturer, but the name wasn’t going to clean a lens, but it does the same job

Moral of the story, don’t get fooled into buying equipment just because it has a famous name on it.

Watch The Rubbish

Just another Gem of information. Image Control Photography photographed a beautiful wedding a while ago. The lovely bride looked splendid in an exquisite dress, the master bedroom looked great, mirrors everywhere. You take the “Picture of the Day”.

After the day has gone it’s off home to sleep………The day after you load the precious images into the PC….Horror of horrors, you find you have taken the “Picture of the Day” with bags, shoes etc. in it somewhere. Then spend the next 2 hours trying to air brush it out.

The photo below is a prime example of it. There were bags etc. left on the chair. It took a lot of time to remove them….

Moral of the story……………..Just spend a few moments looking at the room BEFORE you start shooting.

Wedding Photography Essex. The Camera never lies……………What Rubbish

The picture says, late evening, sipping a G&T while waiting for dinner in a far off place.

Yes, the photograph was taken in Turkey, but taken at mid-day. So why the darkness?

As nice as it is, it shouldn’t be that colour.

The reason is, the camera can’t think for itself. It can
only measure light intensity. The camera measured the light in the centre of
the photograph and set the exposure to that of a Kodak Grey card, that’s a
light standard. Thus, it’s turned the photograph into something different.

As pleasing as it is, it’s not right. The moral of the story
is, no matter what camera you have, or no matter how much you paid for it, it
can’t think for itself. Click on this link to see our picture galleries.
